WHERE Cape Verde
Summary
In Cabo Verde, the number of nesting loggerhead turtles has increased, and so has its illegal harvest and consumption. This evidence-based project will i) improve our knowledge on the illegal trade and consumption market, ii) test innovative law enforcement techniques, iii) propose revisions to existing legal frameworks and iv) strengthen the national network of conservation organisations. Together, this project delivers the roadmap and legal framework for future interventions to reduce poaching of sea turtles and alleviate poverty of affected communities.
Over 600 arrests and more than 500 convictions in wildlife crime since 2017, alongside a decline in ivory trafficking cases and an increase in elephant and rhino populations.
