Summary
The web is the main vehicle for wildlife traffickers in Brazil. Through social media platforms, traffickers reach high numbers of people at both ends of the supply chain. Moreover, the internet provides them with anonymity to avoid legal consequences. The World Wild Web project aims at gathering evidence of illegal trade online, understand consumers’ and suppliers’ motivations and needs, and identify capacity and capability needs of organisations wanting to tackle this phenomenon across Brazil.
Over 600 arrests and more than 500 convictions in wildlife crime since 2017, alongside a decline in ivory trafficking cases and an increase in elephant and rhino populations.
