Summary
This project will tackle cheetah and gazelle trafficking by increasing awareness of wildlife laws and supporting inter- regional collaboration
Combating cheetah and gazelle trafficking in Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen is hindered by incomplete understanding of existing laws by enforcers, prosecutors and judges. This project will increase awareness of wildlife laws among stakeholders along trade routes and support inter- regional collaboration to counter wildlife trafficking by:
- identifying stakeholders, enforcement and cooperation barriers, and existing tools;
- researching legislation to identify gaps and commonalities and developing adaptive tools to increase access;
- Training-of-Trainers in target countries; and
- establishing stakeholders’ support networks for cross-border cooperation
Over 600 arrests and more than 500 convictions in wildlife crime since 2017, alongside a decline in ivory trafficking cases and an increase in elephant and rhino populations.
