Summary
Organised criminal networks based in Mozambique play a significant role in the IWT of elephants and rhinos in the region. This project will support SERNIC, Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service, through targeted training and mentoring in intelligence analysis and advanced investigations to enhance LE capabilities to address IWT, resulting directly in poverty reduction in the region through improved security and the safeguarding of biodiversity. Additionally, the project will directly address poverty reduction through
providing females employment opportunities and skills development.
Over 600 arrests and more than 500 convictions in wildlife crime since 2017, alongside a decline in ivory trafficking cases and an increase in elephant and rhino populations.
