Summary
The current major threat to all eight pangolin species is illegal poaching to feed demand for pangolins scales primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This project will develop a rigorous evidence base on consumer behaviour in southern China, a major end market for pangolin scales. The evidence collected through this project will inform the design of a series of experimental behaviour change interventions employing the latest behavioural science methods.
Over 600 arrests and more than 500 convictions in wildlife crime since 2017, alongside a decline in ivory trafficking cases and an increase in elephant and rhino populations.
